چکیده

In previous work, electromagnetic matchedeld processing was proposed for estimating aircraft altitude with over-the-horizon radar using a single radar dwell. Although this approach exploits the altitude dependence of unresolved multipath returns in complex delay-Doppler space, its performance su ers in situations where the coherent integration time (CIT) of the radar is short. To overcome this limitation, this paper presents a matchedeld estimation approach which uses multiple consecutive dwells on the target. The technique exploits the altitude dependence of dwell-to-dwell shape changes in the complex delay-Doppler multipath return. Monte Carlo simulations results indicate that using short CIT's, moderate signal bandwidth, and a 30 second revisit rate, multi-dwell matchedeld estimation can achieve better than 5,000 ft. accuracy after as few as four radar dwells. The results of processing actual radar data for a high ying commercial aircraft of known altitude are presented which serve to validate the technique.

Robust altitude estimation for over-the-horizon radar using a state-space model for multipath fading

In previous work, a matched-field estimate of aircraft altitude from multiple over-the-horizon radar dwells was presented. This approach exploits the altitude dependence of direct and surface reflected returns off the aircraft and the relative phase changes of these micro-multipath arrivals across radar dwells. Since this previous approach assumed high dwell-to-dwell predictability, it is sensi...

Estimation of aircraft altitude and altitude rate with over-the-horizon radar

In previous work, a matched-field estimate of aircraft altitude which uses multiple over-the-horizon radar dwells was presented. This approach exploited the altitude dependent structure of the micro-multipath rays which result from reflections local to the aircraft. While it was shown that the multi-dwell matched-field estimate is able to accurately estimate altitude while using typical radar p...

Electromagnetic matched-field processing for target height finding with over-the-horizon radar

The refraction of over-the-horizon skywave radar signals by the ionosphere facilitates wide-area surveillance. While current systems measure target ground range, azimuth, and velocity they do not estimate target altitude, which is important for classi cation purposes. In this paper, a method akin to matchedeld processing in underwater acoustics is proposed for target heightnding. The approach e...

Instantaneous altitude estimation of maneuvering target in over-the-horizon radar exploiting multipath Doppler signatures

Over-the-horizon radar systems are capable of localizing targets in range and azimuth but are unable to achieve reliable altitude estimation. Past work has shown that the time-varying Doppler signatures of micro-multipath signals provide rich information for reliable estimation of altitude changes. In this paper, we develop a new technique for the estimation of instantaneous altitude of maneuve...

A Soft-Input Soft-Output Target Detection Algorithm for Passive Radar

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel scheme for multi-static passive radar processing, based on soft-input soft-output processing and Bayesian sparse estimation. In this scheme, each receiver estimates the probability of target presence based on its received signal and the prior information received from a central processor. The resulting posterior target probabilities are transmitted to the c...
